Eighteen men accused of raping girl aged 11 in India

Indian police said Tuesday that 17 men have been arrested for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl over several weeks, in the country's latest horrific sexual assault case. The police told the court that the suspects - including a lift operator, security guard and plumber - repeatedly sexually assaulted the child since January in the apartment where she lived.

As the repeated sexual assault of the girl by several men over a period of time at an apartment complex sparked strong public outrage, the angry group lawyers pounced on the accused when they were coming down the stairs at the Mahila court after being remanded in judicial custody. Meanwhile, Chennai High Court Advocate Association President Mohana Krishnan has announced that no lawyer will take the case of the 18 accused.

According to prosecutors, the serial assaults began when a 66-year-old elevator operator attacked the girl as she was cycling back to her apartment after school. Three days later two men from outside the complex also raped her and videotaped the incident.

The hearing-impaired girl was allegedly sedated and given spiked soft drinks by the accused, which include the building's security guard and lift operator.

The girl was allegedly raped multiple times over the past seven months.

Police said she was also blackmailed with the videos of the attacks. The video of the assault has gone viral. The sister informed their parents about it following which the girl's father lodged a police complaint on July 15.

The details of this case are enough to make anyone's blood boil and yesterday, lawyers at the court the men were taken to, could not maintain decorum.

. Her examination reportedly confirmed she had been raped by many men.

The capital, New Delhi, earned the dubious title of "rape capital of the world", after the case of a 23-year-old university student who was gang-raped on a Delhi bus and died of her injuries sparked nationwide protest and worldwide headlines.

This led to the introduction of the death sentence for the rape girls under the age of 12.

Seventeen men have been charged in India with the gang-rape of an 11-year-old girl in the city of Chennai.
