Liverpool are confident that they will sign Swiss worldwide Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, according to a report in The Guardian.

Liverpool have opened talks with Stoke City over a potential transfer for Xherdan Shaqiri, a source has confirmed to ESPN FC.

The exact nature of the release clause in Shaqiri's contract is unknown, though it is believed to be in excess of £13m.

A move to Anfield would make Shaqiri the Reds' third signing of the summer following the arrival of midfielders Fabinho and Isaac Christie-Davies.

The Switzerland worldwide is now on holiday, having helped his country reach the last 16 of the World Cup. He admitted that he would like to leave following last season's relegation.

Shaqiri joined Stoke from Bayern Munich in 2015 and has two years remaining on his deal but the Championship side are resigned to him moving this summer and they want the business wrapped up quickly.

The players being discussed include Ben Woodburn, Harry Wilson and Sheyi Ojo. Liverpool then fly to America for a three-game tour, where they will play Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Manchester United in the International Champions Cup. Liverpool saw a deal for Lyon captain Nabil Fekir break down due to a medical issue last month, but serious alternatives are yet to emerge amid claims from the player's agent that the move remains on the table.
