United States should throw China out of the WTO: Peter Morici

The Trump Team Has Reportedly Been Drafting Something Called The ‘FART Act

Earlier, Axios quoted a source as saying that Trump allegedly told his aides on several occasions that he wants the U.S. to pull out of the WTO, branding USA membership in the organization as harmful for the country.

"They have to treat us fairly", Trump said Friday about the WTO.

At the same time, Beijing is reportedly pressing the European Union to form an anti-U.S. pact against Trump's trade policies.

During the meeting with Rutte, Trump said he was "very close" to reaching a number of trade deals, describing them as "fair trade deals for our taxpayers, and for our workers and for our farmers".

The worry over Trump's intention to undermine the post-Cold War trading order reached an acute stage afterAxios reported on a leaked draft of a bill granting the president the right to ignore WTO commitments.

Last Friday the outlet had reported that Trump had asked aides about pulling the USA out of the WTO, and said the world had used the organization to "screw the United States".

But the European Union has warned the United States that imposing import tariffs on cars and auto parts would harm its own automotive industry and likely lead to counter-measures by its trading partners on $294 billion of US exports.

Despite the warnings, the president is serious about his threats, something that for many was just a negotiation strategy, but the response of the worldwide community - the imposition of tariffs by Canada, Mexico, and China, as well as the widespread rejection in Europe - seems to indicate that the commercial war is now a reality. But if the talks fail, the affected party has 60 days to form a WTO arbitration committee.

Something suspicious wafts throughout the White House...

However, the Axios article notes that Trump could not unilaterally declare a withdrawal, which USA law "states quite plainly...requires an act of Congress".

The WTO emerged out of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, and was formed in 1995 to resolve trade disputes, with members agreeing to follow a system of rules in order to to avoid unfair trade practices and to open up markets. "If you add up all of the trade in goods and services and the profits made by American companies, the benefit is on the other side of the Atlantic".

While this is not definitive, it is certainly indicative of the fact that the USA might be considering pulling out of the organisation.
