Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta has announced his retirement from global football, following La Roja's loss to Russian Federation in the round of 16.

"It is a reality that is my last match with the national team, at the individual level a wonderful stage is over". A marvellous spell is over.

"Sometimes, the end does not happen the way you dreamed it would, and is instead marked by the circumstances".

With 131 appearances, Iniesta was Spain's fourth-most-capped player, behind Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Xavi Hernandez.

"It's bad, it's tough", he said.

'The critics don't matter so much; we are angry because we weren't capable of taking another step and we didn't rise to the occasion, despite trying everything.

Iniesta started Sunday's last-16 game on the bench as coach Fernando Hierro opted to rest the Barcelona legend.

"Some players will come, others will go, but we're always proud to represent this national team".

Iniesta was later subbed on and also scored during the penalty shootout, but his fairy-tale finish to an illustrious Spain career wasn't to be.

He added: "We're having a fantastic World Cup".

Eleven host cities, namely Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kazan, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg and Samara, were selected to be the venues for the matches of the 2018 World Cup.

From 1950 to 1978 there was something of a goal drought for Spain at the biggest global tournament with only two coming in 1962 in Chile and four in England's tournament held in 1966.
