OnePlus promises 2 years of software updates for all phones going forward

One of the biggest complaints and hesitations around purchasing a OnePlus device was if it would be updated and left behind in the Android software lifecycle. But, it never obliged.

OnePlus has officially said that the OnePlus 3, 3T will keep getting regular OTA (over-the-air) updates until November 2018.

Same was noticed with OnePlus 3T.

OnePlus originally promised to roll-out Android updates for a period of two years after the release of the phone.

This apparently led many to believe that OnePlus 5 (& 5T) series would meet the same fate and may not get Android Q update in 2019. Now, having considered the feedback from users OnePlus seems to have had a change of heart. According to the detailed post, the company will provide regular software updates including new Android versions, Android security patches and new features once every two months for up to 24 months after the launch of the device. And it matches how Google and other major Android handset makers service their own hardware. The Software Maintenance Schedule will provide a clearer picture as to when supported phones will receive regular updates.

It can be noted that OnePlus is considering T models, which come out late in the year, as the starting point for 2+1 software upgrade cycle.

In addition to the announcement for the OnePlus Software Maintenance Schedule, OnePlus also stated in its forum post that the company will be publishing the last Open Beta build for the OnePlus 3 and 3T later this week.

This means OnePlus 5 owners will get an additional four months when compared to the T series.

It's similar to the commitments made by Google and its Pixel range, albeit with OnePlus's OxygenOS rather than stock Android - not that there's much difference where the OnePlus 6 is concerned.
