Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has visited the scene of the petrol tanker explosion at Berger, Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Adesina Tiamiyu, the agency's general manager, said 54 vehicles were razed by the inferno.

"At the last count, we have about 50 vehicles burnt and nine bodies also recovered from the scene".

Another commuter, Micheal Simon, whose vehicle was razed, said: "I am happy I didn't die while trying to escape from the scene".

The Lagos state emergency management agency says in a statement that one of the dead was a child. This is what we have been saying about investing in some of these infrastructure and equipment.

A spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Commission, Bisi Kazeem, said the crash happened around Otedola bridge on the section of the road heading out of Lagos.

Four injured were in hospital, emergency authorities said.

"On behalf of the Lagos State Government, we extend our deepest commiseration to the families of persons who lost their lives as well as properties to the incident". Right now, we would make sure that this traffic is cleared immediately within 30 minutes to free the major highway because we have to continue to use it.

The RRS said its men were also "on ground to manage the situation".

"As a government, we would not relent in putting measures in place to ensure safety of lives and property of all residents".
