'Dream' win over Germany bittersweet for South Korea's Son

The result leaves Germany at the bottom of Group F, with South Korea third.

Germany's 2-0 loss to South Korea and Sweden's 3-0 victory over Mexico means that the 2014 World Cup winners are heading home.

Then, the drama. Young-Gwon poked the ball past Neuer to make it 1-0 - only after a VAR referral that ruled out an original offside decision - and then Son tapped home with Neuer well out of his goal.

It is the fourth time in the last five World Cups that the defending champions have been eliminated in the group stage.

Germany fans were left devastated as the holders exited the World Cup in the group stage.

"It is too early for me to answer that question", Low said when asked if he will take charge during the European championships in 2020. It was a stunning result, both for the team that had come to Russian Federation as the world's No. 1 and for South Korea, which wasn't listed in the top 50 when this tournament began. I'm shocked, I'm shocked because we didn't manage to pull it off.

"We will have to have discussions tomorrow (today), we'll see how it goes".

A draw would already have been enough to deny Germany a place in the knockout round and, more importantly for their Asian opponents, end their campaign on a positive note.

Many critics felt Germany were arrogant in the lead-up to their exit.

The myth was blown clean away by the defeats to Mexico, South Korea and the nervy, last-gasp win over Sweden. We've done very well and we're happy and we deserved to win. The two matches were played at the same time, one in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and the other in Kazan, Russia. Maybe we thought at the push of a button we could shift gears but we lost against Mexico.

The Swiss are second in the table and level on four points with Brazil, but have an inferior goal difference. We couldn't flip that switch.

While the reactions which followed that save from both sets of players were picturesque, alluding to the frenzy of emotions in play, it was a routine save for Cho who carried on with his game like before. "The players had been heavily criticized and it would have been painful to live through all that".

What happened in Kazan at 6:50pm on June 27 should, for the next four years at least, serve as a constant reminder of that.

"This is a case of absolute sadness and disappointment". We did very well.

"It is right that we have gone out in the group stage", Loew added.

Mexico meanwhile thrilled in victories over Germany and South Korea but were overwhelmed by Sweden, who did well to pick themselves up after the demoralizing reverse to Low's side.
