Tyler Hilinski Former Washington State Quarterback Who Took His Own Life Had CTE

An autopsy has been conducted by the Mayo Clinic and according to Hilinski's parents, it revealed he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy at the time of his death.

Tyler Hilinski appeared in eight games during his sophomore season, throwing for 1,176 yards and seven touchdowns. After failing to report for offseason practice, the Washington State quarterback's body was discovered at his home. Most notably, he led the Cougars to a dramatic triple overtime comeback win over Boise State. With starter Luke Falksidelined, he made his first career start in the Holiday Bowl against Michigan State on December 28.

Omalu has reported receiving calls from the parents of middle and high school athletes whose families are noticing changes in behavior following blows to the head.

Last October, Tyler relieved Falk late in the second quarter at Arizona, down 20-7. He also threw four interceptions and Washington State lost. The family also spoke to Sports Illustrated. Kelly even drove to the Cougars' game at Utah on November 11 and consoled his brother on the balcony outside Tyler's hotel room the night before, reminding him he couldn't win every time in triple OT. "He felt like he let everyone down", Kelly says.

The SI story and documentary offer intimate portraits of a family's search for answers as it processes unfathomable grief.

"I remember being kind of numb because you don't think your son is going to die, you certainly don't think he is going to kill himself, and you don't think you have to give his brain to the Mayo Clinic for [a post-mortem medical examination]", she told Sports Illustrated. Many eerily mirror the symptoms of retired National Football League players: difficulty focusing, increased aggression and irritability, and poor performance in school. At a minimum, they had known something. "We were in complete shock", Mark said on Today.

Tyler Hilinski, a promising quarterback and beloved young man, took his own life earlier this year at the age of 21.

Since his death, the family started Hilinski's Hope, an organization that promotes awareness and education of mental health and wellness for student athletes.
