Trump backs down on separating immigrant children, signs executive order

Border Patrol detains immigrant families crossing US-Mexico border

President Donald Trump signed an order Wednesday stopping his administration's policy of separating children from their parents if they are caught illegally crossing the us border.

It's unclear exactly what the president might be supporting, but he said he would be signing something "in a little while".

"This executive order would replace one crisis for another".

And daughter Ivanka Trump tweeted, "Thank you @POTUS for taking critical action ending family separation at our border".

The President claimed, though, that he isn't backing down.

This meeting marks Mr. Trump's second meeting with Congress this week, following his meeting with House GOP members Tuesday, in the midst of a backlash over the separation of immigrant children from their parents who enter the country illegally through the southern border.

"Of course we don't want families to be separated".

Experts argue though Trump is seeking to galvanize his base with hardline law enforcement on immigration, moves like forcing family separations could backfire and hurt Republican candidates' chances in November's midterm elections.

Opposition lawmakers rebuked May for not criticising the Trump administration in stronger terms, or for cancelling Trump's visit to the United Kingdom, where he is scheduled to meet Queen Elizabeth on July 13. He specifically criticized the president's use of the term "chain migration" to describe the long-standing US policy of allowing USA citizens to assist relatives overseas in obtaining legal residency.

We can either release all illegal immigrant families and minors who show up at the border from Central America or we can arrest the adults for the federal crime of illegal entry.

House Republican Mario Diaz-Balart said the priority of ending the separations has been slotted into a compromise bill now under consideration and favored by GOP moderates.

"It's about keeping families together, while at the same time being sure we have a very powerful, very strong border", Trump said.

One of the people familiar with Nielsen's thinking said she believes there is no certainty that Congress will act to fix the separation issue.

The order specifies that migrants entering the USA with children will not be kept together if there's a fear for the child's welfare.

It also directs Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to find housing for these families and to build facilities if necessary. The change would require court approval, a process that may grow complicated if immigrant activists or others pose a legal challenge to the move. Instead, the children could be detained indefinitely with their parents. I consider it to be a very important executive order.

Migrant families from Mexico, fleeing from violence, listen to officers of the US Customs and Border Protection before entering the United States to apply for asylum at Paso del Norte worldwide border crossing bridge in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, on June 20, 2018.

It does not end the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy.

"The dilemma is that if you're weak, if you're weak, which some people would like you to be, if you're really, really pathetically weak, the country's going to be overrun with millions of people", Trump said. That's a tough dilemma. "I think it's being handled appropriately and they are just seeing a different way to put a bad light on the president". He announced the postponement as he sat down at the White House with Republican members of the House and Senate.

Nielsen has been at the White House all morning in the room with the President and key staff, and she's a "key player" in this.

If caving into intense political pressure wasn't enough of a setback for the president, his executive order also misspelled the word "separation" as "seperation".

It is not the first time a lack of diversity surrounding Trump has been noted.

Ryan said it is a "ridiculous choice" to decide between separating families and enforcing laws, and that both bills up for consideration would take steps to solve the issue. Other protesters, who included other parents, children and activists, waved signs as the mothers nursed.

From March to May this year, more than 50,000 people a month were apprehended for illegally crossing the border from Mexico.
