Many critics have tapped The Band's Visit as their odds-on favourite to be crowned best new musical. Winning all but one of the 11 categories it was nominated for, the musical also took the prizes for best featured actor, for Ar'iel Stachel, as well as best book by Itamar Moses, best director, orchestration, sound design and lighting. "If you're anything like me, I imagine you have a lot of questions - like, 'What happened? So this is for the people who lose/Most of us have been in your shoes", they sang in the upbeat opening number. Head writer Dave Boone did an excellent job of crafting material tailored to each person: Amy Schumer introduced the performance of My Fair Lady by calling it a "comedy about classism and sexism" and referring to Henry Higgins as a "mansplainer". Shalhoub also explained to the press that he had to be talked into doing the show - twice - by his wife.

"The Band's Visit", based on a tiny movie that maybe two people saw, tells the story of an Egyptian military band that, through a travel mix-up, winds up for a night in a small, dusty, forsaken village in northern Israel.

"I never dreamed that one day I, a Brit of all things, would be honoured with the same lifetime award that my idol won, by my peers and the true home of the musical, Broadway".

The Middle East conflict, immigration, LGBT equality, gun control - many social issues came up, explicitly or implicitly, during the ceremony, which was hosted with a light (and musical) touch by Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban.
