Earlier this year Gov. Ralph Northam signed a new law that requires the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services to report its progress and activity on suicide prevention every year.

More than half of those who died by suicide did not have a diagnosed mental health condition, the researchers found.

Prevention efforts, often focused on mental health, could be broadened to focus on people undergoing life stresses like job losses or divorces, the CDC's Dr. Anne Schuchat said in a media briefing.

Twenty-five states saw percentage rate increases of more than 30 percent over the 17 years.

As shown in the map below from the CDC, Nevada is the only state that did not experience an increase in the rate of suicide-though it's still high at an average of 22 per 1,000 during years in the study period.

But the two deaths, along with stories about the rising suicide rate nationally, have led to increased attention to suicide and associated resources.

Reidenberg understands the complexities of suicides, pointing out there are nearly always multiple causes, including mental illnesses, substance abuse, a life change such as a job loss or a break up.

But "if we only look at this as a mental health issue, we won't make the progress that we need", Schuchat said in news conference today (June 7). An increase of greater than 30 percent in suicides was observed in 25 states. "We are concerned with all aspects of suicide prevention, including access to lethal means, and so we do include that in a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention". In all, 772 Oregonians died by suicide in 2016, the CDC reported. While the suicide rate increased in women, it's still 3 to 5 times higher in men.

The report found that firearms were the most common method of suicide for both those with and without mental illnesses.

"A celebrity's suicide can create a contagion that we want to be aware of and those individuals who are a risk, who might be connected to that celebrity, we want to reach out to them", Egan said. Learn more about how to support friends, family, and neighbors after a suicide attempt.

"Dying by suicide isn't a normal response to life's adversities", said Dan Reidenberg, executive director of Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE).

Social isolation, lack of mental-health treatment, drug and alcohol abuse and gun ownership are among the factors that contribute to suicide.
