Kate's older sister, Reta Brosnahan Saffo, told CBS News on Wednesday that she believes the 55-year-old designer - who was found dead of apparent suicide on Tuesday - was suffering from bipolar disorder.

She left behind her husband of 24 years, Andy Spade and their 13-year-old daughter, Frances Beatrix.

"I'd flown out to Napa and NYC several times in the past 3-4 years to help her to get the treatment she needed", Saffo wrote. New York Fashion Week creator Fern Mallis, who knew Spade for almost three decades, was shocked by her death.

Saffo and other members of the Spade family tried in vain to get Kate help, but she says that, ultimately, Kate's pain was too great.

"If you're honest and fair as you can be, not only in business but in life, things will work out", she said. "It was a complete shock". "For the past 10 months we had been living separately, but within a few blocks of each other", he said in a statement to People. "We were not legally separated, and never even discussed divorce".

He said there were "personal demons she was battling". Then she added, "I'm off to bed for a good cry". Saffo wrote, adding that Spade was concerned hospitalisation for treatment would hurt the light-hearted image of her eponymous brand.

"The last I talked with her, the night before last, she was happy planning a trip to California to look at colleges".

The Instagram picture shows Kate and David standing together, and the caption reads: "Fuzzy picture but I love it. Kate and I during Christmas family photos".

After her death was announced on Tuesday, a family spokesman issued the following statement: 'We are all devastated by today's tragedy.

"She was exceedingly kind, beautifully sensitive, insanely talented, amusing as heck and one of the most generous people I have ever known".

In a report this morning, TMZ also addressed Spade's mental health, alleging that she might have been "extremely depressed in her last days of life" because her husband wanted a divorce.

In the same statement to the Daily News, Saffo said Spade was ready to get help, but was also anxious about the image of her brand if she did. But one police source, who didn't want to be identified, said Spade and her husband appeared to have been in the midst of marital problems.

Kate Spade had anxiety and depression for years, he said.

"We worked together at a clothing store, and I was on the women's side".
