Simona Halep wins grueling duel to reach French Open semis

"I missed a lot at the beginning of the match".

The top-ranked player indeed showed solid nerves to turn things up after a really bad start in her French Open quarterfinal on Wednesday. She will face either world number one Simona Halep or Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals.

Two women who have won the title at Roland Garros, Maria Sharapova and Garbine Muguruza, play each other in the quarterfinals.

"When you're writing an autobiography, I don't think there is any reason to write anything that's not true", said Sharapova after being knocked out of Roland Garros by Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-1 in the quarter-finals.

Halep was my pick to win the French Open, and I truly hope she finally gets the money off her back.

Schwartzman did the unthinkable by claiming it 6-4, as the 10-time French champion dropped a set at Roland Garros for the first time since 2015.

The German lost her first set of the tournament in the second set after Halep broke her serve in the opening game, and the Romanian surged clear in the deciding set. The victor earns a berth in the final at Roland Garros - plus the No 1 ranking that now belongs to Halep. Muguruza, who is 3-1 against the No. 1-seeded Halep in her career, has never squared off with her in a Grand Slam. This time, she needed only 70 minutes to eliminate Sharapova and dominated her with superb returning, breaking the former No. 1 a half-dozen times.

Williams withdrew shortly before the match with a pectoral muscle injury, a moment Sharapova said she found briefly startling but not destabilizing. That includes the French Open in 2014 and 2017, and the Australian Open in January.

The signs were ominous when the five-times Grand Slam champion coughed up three nervy double-faults in the opening game.

"I think she did a lot of things better than I did. I'm happy with that", the 24-year-old said.

An anti-climactic match ended predictably, with a Sharapova backhand nestling in the net - her 27th unforced error. The German raced into a 3-0 lead with an early double break.

One could not tell on Monday, however, as she kept misfiring against two-time Grand Slam champion Kerber. ". Coming into this part of the year, I was losing a few first-round matches, matches that I wanted to be winning, of course".
