Microsoft's acquisition of open-source icon GitHub is reportedly a done deal

After the deal closes, GitHub's financials will be reports as part of Microsoft's Intelligent Cloud segment. Microsoft expects the acquisition will be accretive to operating income in fiscal year 2020 on a non-GAAP basis, and to have minimal dilution of less than 1 percent to earnings per share in fiscal years 2019 and 2020 on a non-GAAP basis, based on the expected close time frame.

Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft has made a decision to acquire GitHub for an unknown amount.

Microsoft was once considered to be the archnemesis of open-source software, but it has increasingly embraced the idea since its current Chief Executive Satya Nadella (pictured) took over the top job back in 2014.

Microsoft has talked to GitHub on and off for a few years.

As per a report from Business Insider, the Redmond-based tech giant has been in discussions with the software developer platform in the last several weeks with hopes of making a rather major acquisition.

The code repository has been used by some of software development's biggest names including Apple, Google, and Amazon.

It has just been announced that Microsoft has acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock.

Others wondered about Microsoft's renewed power in software, particularly since Microsoft also owns LinkedIn, potentially giving it a huge leg up in the field of technical recruiting. It also gives Microsoft the opportunity to make all the code run as a trial demo, test system or developer system on Azure. Though GitHub was last valued at $2 billion in 2015, its losses were significant in 2016, and the company has been hunting for a new CEO for nine months. If Microsoft does acquire GitHub, it could be seen as a visible attempt to further integrate Linux and Windows and increase interoperability, as demonstrated by the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) compatibility layer found in Windows 10.

The best thing Microsoft can do is not to do anything to GitHub for the foreseeable future.

Despite Microsoft's turn towards open-source, some GitHub users remain concerned that Microsoft's leadership will undermine the core values of the system and hurt the developers that rely on it.
