Top seed Halep survives major scare to make second round

Top-seeded Simona Halep is in trouble in her weather-delayed first-round match at the French Open, losing the first set 6-2 to 83rd-ranked Alison Riske of the United States.

Second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki delivered a ruthless performance on Court Philippe Chatrier, dropping just 25 points in her lopsided 6-1, 6-0 win over qualifier and Roland Garros debutant Georgina Garcia Perez of Spain.

In the blink of an eye Halep was leading the second set 5-0 as the tables quickly turned, Riske's previously confident display all but disappearing as Halep's trademark intensity finally came to the fore.

The 26-year-old Romanian hit 16 unforced errors in a opening set, but then won nine of the next 10 games to take control.

Her form leading up to the clay-court Grand Slam was mixed, exiting the Madrid Open in the third round and suffering a defeat in her opening match of the Rome Open.

"I had a slow start because it's always tough to start this tournament", she said.

Czech Kvitova has not reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros since a run to the last four in 2012.

The two-time runner-up lost the first five games to American Alison Riske and the first set was soon gone.

Wozniacki won her first grand slam trophy at the Australian Open this year and can return to the No 1 ranking held by Halep by winning the title in Paris.

"I think the nerves are really good". Fix those two areas, and Petkovic has a shot to get her biggest victory in quite some time.

Former champion Novak Djokovic reached the French Open third round for the 13th consecutive year by beating Spanish qualifier Jaume Munar 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday (May 30), while second seed Alexander Zverev staged a fightback to win a five-setter with Dusan Lajovic. The result, it's going to come if I play well.

Another pre-tournament favourite Elina Svitolina also eased through her second round meeting with Viktoria Kuzmova 6-3 6-4 to further her backing for a maiden major title. Meanwhile, in a late-evening first round men's doubles match on Wednesday, the Indian combine of Yuki Bhambri and Divij Sharan pulled past Frenchman Fabrice Martin and India's Purav Raja in 2 hours and 21 minutes.

Sharapova is playing at Roland Garros for the first time since 2015, having been refused a wildcard entry in 2017 after serving a doping ban the previous year.

The Spaniard sealed the match with a whipped cross-court forehand, though for much of the match the number three seed struggled to find her rhythm and range on the forehand.
