Danish MPs greenlight ban on wearing burqa & niqab in public

But the law is popularly known as the "burqa ban" and is mostly seen as being directed at the dress worn by some Muslim women.

Technically the law bans any full-face garment where there is no "recognisable purpose" for wearing it, such as cold weather or complying with laws such as wearing helmets on motorcycles.

Those violating the ban will be forced to pay 1,000 kroner (£118; $157), with fines ten times higher for repeat offenders.

Fines will range from 1,000 Danish crowns (160 dollars) for a first offence to 10,000 crowns for the fourth violation.

Addition to this, any person forcing or threatening another to wear a full-face veil or garments covering the face would risk two years imprisonment.

Austria, France and Belgium have similar laws.

The justice ministry and the police now will write more detailed guidelines.

A petition calling for a ban on male circumcision in Denmark will now go to parliament after organisers said Friday it had attracted more than the 50,000 signatures required.

While, Louise Holck of the Danish Institute for Human Rights was reported saying in The Washington Post that if the target is only on women wearing niqab or burqa, it could amount to discrimination against a minority group and hence be against the law. "We would be happy to see governments addressing real problems and security issues that Muslim women face in their everyday life".

Telling women how to dress doesn't liberate them - it denies them the right to make their own choices.

In February, when the Danish government formally proposed the face veil ban, Poulsen said that such veils were "disrespectful" to the community.

It will include full-face veils like the niqab, balaclavas, face-covering ski masks, face masks and fake beards, but not protective masks.

Most notably, in 2011, French President Francois Fillon in a decree banned the full-face veils from public spaces.

"With a ban on covering the face, we are drawing a line in the sand and underlining that in Denmark we show each other trust and respect by meeting face to face", Poulsen said.

In early 2018, the Danish Parliament introduced a new process called the "Citizen's Initiative" that allows people to put items of interest on the parliamentary agenda, provided they have the support of 50,000 individuals.
