The change to Amazon's website traffic, is being communicated to Amazon's worldwide customers with the company stating that from the 1st of July Aussie visitors to Amazon's global.com site will be redirected to the Australian.com.au site instead.

Amazon will block Australia-based customers trying to buy products on its overseas sites when the GST is applied to all imported e-commerce items in July.

From 1 July, when Australia's new GST regulations kick in, Australian consumers shopping on Amazon worldwide sites will be redirected to the local Australian site.

In a statement about the change, Amazon said it regretted "any inconvenience this may cause customers".

Media reports said the other major online retailer, eBay, would not follow Amazon and apply the new tax in the interests of consumers purchasing goods from its website.

In addition to allowing Amazon's U.S. arm to bypass complicated GST obligations, it also forces more customers to use the Australian service, therefore boosting its sales performance.

Amazon will soon be sub-prime, if you live in Australia.

We have taken this step to provide our customers with continued access to worldwide selection and allow us to remain compliant with the law which requires us to collect and remit GST on products sold on Amazon sites that are shipped from overseas.

But even with the changes, the number of products available will be a fraction of what's on sale globally.

Amazon.com.au has roughly a tenth the selection of Amazon's USA website, with about 60 million products compared to almost half a billion.

"Amazon Global Store will allow Australian customers to shop on amazon.com.au for over 4 million items that were previously only accessible on amazon.com".

"If multinationals aren't forced to pay their fair share of tax, they will have a competitive advantage over retailers here in Australia, on our own main streets and in our shopping centers". "That tax revenue is used to fund essential services".

Amazon has today announced that from July 1st, Australian shoppers will no longer be able to use Amazon.com (as well as all of the other overseas Amazon sites).

"A level playing field will help Australian businesses grow and create more jobs and opportunities", the Treasurer's spokesperson is reported to have said.
