LeBron James carries under-powered Cleveland Cavaliers to NBA finals with game seven win over Boston Celtics

But after playing all 48 minutes in his 100th game of the season, punctuating one of the greatest series a player has ever had with 35 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists, he sure looks capable of more.

Boston shot just nine-from-35 from beyond the arc at the TD Garden, leaving the Celtics with too much to do during a dramatic elimination showdown as 33-year-old James booked his place in the National Basketball Association finals for the eighth consecutive season.

The Celtics had won each of their first three home games of the series in convincing fashion, taking a first half lead and holding Cleveland off the rest of the way.

Tatum had a dunk over James with 6:41 left - staring down the Cavaliers star and bumping him with his chest - then followed it with a 3-pointer that gave the Celtics a 72-71 lead.

With the win, the Cavaliers became just the fourth franchise to reach the Finals in four straight seasons - joining the Celtics (1957-1966, 1984-1987), Lakers (1982-1985) and Heat (2011-2014).

James became the 13th athlete in the four major US professional sports - the NBA, NHL, MLB and National Football League - to make it to eight straight championship series, joining seven Montreal Canadiens players and five former Celtics, according to data compiled by ESPN Stats & Information.

James kept his team in the lead with his shooting and passing wizardry but faced a formidable adversary in 20-year-old Tatum.

The Boston Celtics were one game away from making the NBA Finals with their two best players - Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward - sitting on the bench while recovering from season-ending injuries.

Cleveland has faced the Warriors in the last three NBA Finals, winning in 2016 and losing in 2015 and 2017. "We win, oh, we knew they could do it", Green said.

"It's been good, it's been bad", James said.

"I thought we were pretty good at that. but he still scored 35". They have to be exhausted, and that's no way to go into a series against Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry and the Warriors, who blew Cleveland away in five games past year, or James Harden and a Rockets team that can be every bit as potent on one end and lock teams down on the other. It's ridiculous. With the pressure, with the scrutiny, it doesn't matter. If he's just at home chilling or somewhere not important, to me, that's a problem. The Celtics were led by Jayson Tatum with 24.

At the podium, James said he hadn't processed the fact he is going back to the Finals.

Cavaliers: Shot just 2 of 17 from 3-point range in the first half.

"But what I've been telling the guys throughout the playoffs, as a team we are learning". Rozier, meanwhile, went just 2-for-14, and failed to connect on any of his 10 three-point attempts.

Jeff Green finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, J.R. Smith tallied 12 points and Tristan Thompson scored 10 for Cleveland who beat Boston 109-99 on Friday to force game seven.

"I don't think he wanted to be seen". His undeniably confident attitude was in full display after the Celtics' close loss in Game 6.
