Trump: NFL players who don't stand during National Anthem maybe 'shouldn't be in the country'

For now, other than New York Jets owner Christopher Johnson's decision to pay any fines doled out by the league without passing punishment to the players, each franchise's approach is uncertain.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sparked the protests in 2016 after he refused to stand during the national anthem and honor a song and a flag that he said "oppresses black people and people of color".

The NFL announced a new anthem policy Wednesday - without consulting players - that allows players to stay in locker rooms during the song, but if they are on the field, they must stand.

While other players throughout the NFL took a knee to protest racial injustice previous year, all Bears players stood during the national anthem all season, locking arms in a show of unity.

"You shouldn't be there - maybe you shouldn't be in the country".

"I think it would be an affront to our public and our players if the game was played there", said the Philadelphia Eagles owner, Norman Braman, who was also chair of the league's Super Bowl site-selection committee. Or you shouldn't be playing, you shouldn't be there. "I don't think people should be staying in locker rooms but still, I think it's good".

For tactical reasons, I'm not a big fan of kneeling during the national anthem as a form of protest. The league has not said how much in fines teams will face, or explicitly defined the term "respect", though commissioner Roger Goodell said in a press conference that the league wanted "people to stand". The president's comments spurred a national conversation about patriotism and the nation's symbols and the use of peaceful protest. "I brought it out".

"I'm sure it's something that will be addressed, by the players and by the coaches, collectively", Lions receiver Golden Tate said Thursday.

"I think the people pushed it forward, this was not me".

With no deadlines to meet and a monthlong summer break coming up, NFL teams are in no hurry to formulate a policy on demonstrations during the national anthem.

The decision was applauded by the Trump administration. By instituting a policy yesterday to punish players who exercise their right of free expression by kneeling, the league is rejecting a basic American value.

"Our union will review the new "policy" and challenge any aspect of it that is inconsistent with the collective bargaining agreement", an NFLPA statement read on Wednesday.

One certain thing: The uncertainty about how each team will deal with players who defy the NFL's mandate will last for weeks.
