Burr issued his statement after members of the committee met in a closed session with former National Intelligence Director James Clapper, former CIA Director John Brennan and former director of the National Security Agency, Mike Rogers.

'There is no doubt that Russian Federation undertook an unprecedented effort to interfere with our 2016 elections, ' the committee's Republican chairman, Senator Richard Burr, said in a joint statement with the committee's top Democrat after a closed hearing on the issue. The first is attempted coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, and the second is possible obstruction of justice regarding the investigation into that potential collusion.

Trump allies in Congress have routinely acknowledged Russia's interference in the 2016 election but have stopped short of embracing the conclusion that their goal was to support Trump's election.

Goldstone later claimed that the meeting at Trump Tower was largely disappointing, telling the Sunday Times of London that the information Veselnitskaya had presented was "vague, generic nonsense", despite promising "information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful" to then-candidate Donald Trump.

But during that June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer, Trump Jr. grew impatient and wound up "cutting off" the Russian lawyer, according to Goldstone's testimony. I don't know what, maybe someone misunderstood something I said.

"In the transcript from Trump Jr.'s testimony, he says, "(I) n his email to me Rob suggested that someone had official documents and information that would incriminate Hilary Clinton and her dealings with Russian Federation and that the information would be very useful to the campaign".

Last July, Trump Jr.

"The public can now see that for over five hours I answered every question asked and was candid and forthright with the committee", he said.

Mueller has brought several unrelated charges against Manafort, including money-laundering conspiracy, false statements and acting as an unregistered foreign agent related to Ukrainian political work.

The committee's finding on Wednesday is the second of four interim conclusions that the panel plans to release before it issues its final report, which will most likely take place this year.

The pitches, which began in January 2016, represent the first known instance of Russian nationals urging Trump to accept their help in promoting his White House bid through a more robust social media campaign - though in this case it is limited to Russian-based platforms. Admits that his far may have participated in drafting of a White House statement that meeting had been proposed as part of Russian effort to help omitted election campaign.

The Senate committee's findings come on the heels of report last month from Republican members of the House Intelligence Committee that found "no evidence" of Trump campaign collusion.

The Senate intelligence committee says it agrees with a 2017 assessment by intelligence agencies that Russian Federation intervened in the presidential election earlier to hurt the candidacy of Democrat Hillary Clinton and to help Donald Trump. Mark Warner, a Democrat from Virginia who serves as the committee's vice chair, who echoed Burr's sentiments.

The bipartisan conclusion countered the assessment of House Intelligence Committee Republicans, who had accused intelligence agencies of failing to use appropriate "tradecraft" when those agencies determined that Russian Federation backed Trump's candidacy.
