Jerusalem celebrates 51 years to unification

In the last several weeks, especially on Fridays, protests have occurred in the border region between Gaza and Israel to support the return of Palestinian refugees to their former homes in Israel.

The 2012 candidate spoke Sunday at a Jewish-Christian Bible study session in Israel's parliament.

Israel accuses Hamas of using the protests as a cover to launch attacks against the Gaza-Israel border fence, and Israeli soldiers on the other side. Israeli snipers have already killed at least 49 Palestinians in the unrest at the fence, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and shot 2,240 more.

The State of Palestine seeks all of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza territories for an independent state.

This year's celebration takes on added significance due to the embassy move the following day.

Though the USA embassy will now be in Jerusalem, the US ambassador will not yet work there permanently, The New York Times reported. But the only thing the Palestinians have had going for them is that worldwide law deems East Jerusalem to be occupied Palestinian territory, just like the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, conquered at the same time, in 1967. From this perspective, the decision is potentially destructive to the principle of two states for two peoples, which most of the worldwide community has adopted as a de facto alternative to the UN Partition Plan.

Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan is leading the USA delegation in the absence of Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. "Instead the European Union can't even mount a symbolic condemnation because there are too many countries looking to follow our leadership".

The Israeli military says its troops are defending the border and firing in accordance with the rules of engagement.

On Saturday Conricus said the rules of engagement had not been changed.

The grandiose celebrations that the government has organized to mark the event, which will reach their peak in the ceremony that will take place today in Jerusalem's Arnona neighborhood, are meant to stress Israel's exclusive hold on Jerusalem and glorify the prime minister's recent series of victories. In the decades since 1967, worldwide consensus has been that the city's status must be negotiated between the two sides, but Trump broke with that to global outrage.

"The United States government has taken a number of actions to ensure that not only our governmental interests but the American people in that region are secure as well, and we're comfortable we've taken action that reduces that risk", said the top U.S. diplomat. I think tomorrow will be continued very strong coordinated security between the USA and Israel and we're hoping all that hard work pays off.

"I think it will make it easier". At a dinner organized by the Friends of Zion Museum, U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and senior presidential adviser Jared Kushner, also the president's son-in-law, were presented awards for their efforts to spearhead the embassy move.

As is the case throughout the occupied West Bank, the expanding settlements are guarded by a constant Israeli military presence.
