A KNIFEMAN went on the rampage in central Paris tonight, killing one innocent pedestrian and injuring several more, before being killed himself.

A knife-wielding assailant killed one person and injured four others in a lively neighborhood near Paris' famed Opera Garnier before he was killed by police in the French capital Saturday night.

Police officers cordon off the area after a knife attack in central Paris, Saturday May 12, 2018.

The attacker, who has not been identified, is reported to have been shot dead by police.

According to Paris police, two victims are seriously wounded, and two others are slightly injured. "Police intervened immediately", Pierre Gaudin, a senior official at the Paris prefecture, said.

The identity of the slain attacker and the reason for his actions were unclear.

"I was having a drink with friends and we heard a boom", a witness named Gloria, who had been in a nearby bar, told reporters at the scene. "Then I went out to see what was going on, and then I saw a man on the ground", she added.

A judicial source said authorities were looking into whether the anti-terrorism prosecutor's office should be handling the case. A string of jihadist attacks have claimed the lives of over 245 people around France in the past three years.

French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb praised the work of police, and is urging people to be careful about spreading fake news, tweeting: "Please do not share misinformation".
