NBC News Probe Absolves Network Executives in Matt Lauer Scandal

McGowan said she forced Ronan Farrow to take his reporting to The New Yorker

The former NBC News reporter who accused Brokaw of misconduct, Linda Vester, wrote in The Washington Post on Wednesday that NBC should have gone outside the company for its investigation.

Sixty-eight people, including current and former Today hosts and NBC News management, were interviewed during the investigation, which was handled by two outside law firms and the company's general counsel.

Her team "conducted targeted email account searches and reviews, including the email accounts of Lauer and NBC News and Today Show leadership, reviewed text messages on Lauer's work-issued phones, and reviewed other relevant documents and information".

Harris' final report was released today. That article led to more women coming forward, and then it sparked a movement called #MeToo where victims from all industries began to speak out about the misconduct of men in power.

The four women all "confirmed that they did not tell their direct manager or anyone else in a position of authority about their sexual encounters with Lauer". The alleged episodes occurred in 2000, 2001, 2007 and 2014, respectively.

The report, which came after an internal investigation from the company, said that neither management nor H.R. had any knowledge of Lauer's transgressions before November 27, 2017.

Many witnesses said they had heard rumors about Lauer's personal life, including his troubled marriage and possible extramarital affairs. It's good that the company checked with leaders of NBC News and the "Today" show - 68 people, in all, were interviewed for the report. "We were also unable to establish that any of those interviewed, including NBC News and Today Show leadership, News HR and others in positions of authority in the News Division, knew that Lauer had engaged in sexual activity with other employees".

During her a year ago on the "Today" show, in 2012, Lauer's co-host Ann Curry said she approached two members of NBC's management team after an NBC female staffer told her she was "sexually harassed physically" by Lauer.

"I've made no public feedback on the various false tales from nameless or biased sources which have been reported about me over these previous a number of months - together with a declare that I'd, and even might, lock somebody in my workplace", he continued.

But according to NBC's facilities team, many network executives in older offices had this control as an efficient way to close the door without getting up from the desk.

But Lauer used it to initiate inappropriate contact, while ensuring nobody would walk in on him.

The investigation included interviews with over 70 current employees and found that Lauer "frequently engaged in sexual banter or joking in open working environments", which may have contributed to an environment in which the women who experienced harassment didn't feel comfortable in reporting it to HR.

In response to the report, NBC News chairman Andrew Lack said he wanted to enact change and offered a seven-point plan to offer a safer and more respectful environment for the future. It said the button was "a commonly available feature" in NBC's Rockefeller Center offices in NY and that, contrary to some news reports, it doesn't lock the door from the inside.

It added, "Curry declined to share with the investigation team the identity of anyone in management with whom she spoke at the time or the identity of the woman who came to her with a complaint about Lauer".

Lack encouraged employees to learn from the past and work to transform company culture.
