"The union has called on the political heads to appoint a credible replacement that will prioritise the resuscitation of the health care service in North West province which has all but collapsed".

Mahumapelo told City Press he signed Nelson's letter of appointment "this afternoon".

At the weekend, local media reported that ANC leaders asked Mahumapelo to resign at a national working committee meeting in Cape Town last week.

Mahumapelo said the party's provincial executive committee (PEC) said to him on Wednesday: "You did not deploy yourself; don't resign, we will engage national (ANC) in the meantime". "It is individuals that are in the ANC", said Mahumapelo to loud cheers.

Allegations of corruption and maladministration in the province have been quoted as the reason for the protests.

Embattled North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo left the public and the provincial legislature perplexed on Tuesday at the end of his budget vote speech.

It remains unclear how long Mahumapelo is expected to be on leave.

The protests started in the provincial capital of Mahikeng, after the Economic Freedom Fighters motion of no confidence in Mahumapelo was indefinitely postponed when the party launched a court bid to demand a secret ballot to "protect" ANC MPLs.

South Africa's ruling ANC party Wednesday sent a provincial premier on forced leave after his alleged corruption sparked violent riots, as President Cyril Ramaphosa struggles to impose control over the party.

Dantjie says an acting premier will be appointed by Mahumapelo while the high-level ministerial task team, led by Minister in the Presidency Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, does its work.
