Latest News: Drama continues after Home chaplain rescinds resignation letter requested by Ryan

Conroy announced he would stay after Ryan's decision sparked backlash from members on both sides of the aisle, with Democrats pushing for the formation of a special committee to investigate his motives.

However Democrats are urgent forward with their calls for for an investigation into Conroy's complaints about how he is been handled.

The chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives, who was forced out of the position last week by House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), has been reinstated after a scathing standoff with Ryan amid questions from members of Congress demanding an explanation for his abrupt departure.

Conroy has served as the chamber's chaplain since 2011.

At that point I thought that I had little choice but to resign as my assumption was that you had the absolute prerogative and authority to end my term as House Chaplain.

Conroy, a Jesuit priest, has been chaplain for the previous 11 years. At this time, and upon advice of counsel I hereby retract and rescind said resignation for the reasons that follow.

"I strongly disagree with Father Conroy's recollection of our conversation", he said.

Ryan accepted Conroy's decision, saying the chaplain will remain in his post for the rest of his term, which ends in January.

Conroy further claimed that Ryan's chief of staff, Jonathan Burks made anti-Catholic remarks to him when he initially raised concern about why he was being asked to resign.

Ryan added he meant to sit with Conroy "so that we're able to move forward for the good of the whole House".

Last November, Conroy said in a prayer that the upcoming tax reform legislation needed to be fair and prayed that representatives would ensure "there are not winners and losers under new tax laws, but benefits balanced and shared by all Americans".

"This was not about politics or prayers, it was about pastoral services", Ryan said. Ryan has said he was dissatisfied with Conroy's pastoral care to lawmakers.

Ryan himself is also Catholic.

Many different lawmakers, together with Republicans, got here to Conroy's protection after his resignation was made public, and demanded solutions for the dismissal. Another theory that was put forward was that some Republicans were bothered by the fact that, at the request of a Democratic Congressman from North Carolina, Conroy had invited a Muslim Imam affiliated with Duke University to deliver the opening prayer for the House back in October of a year ago. "We consider that, absent such particulars, questions will inevitably come up in regards to the politicization of the method for hiring and dismissing a Home chaplain". I have never been disciplined nor reprimanded nor I have ever ever heard a complaint about my ministry during my time as House Chaplain.

Mr. Ryan's move also exposed long-simmering tensions between Catholics and evangelicals in the House. "It appears intentionally underhanded, and that is deeply disappointing!" he wrote. "But I can't say it". The hubbub around Father Conroy is all the more contentious in Catholic circles because Mr. Ryan is a Catholic conservative.
