Self-driving car crash in Arizona: Waymo car involved in Chandler crash

"Today while testing our self-driving vehicle in Chandler, Arizona, another auto traveling in an oncoming lane swerved across the median and struck our minivan", Waymo told SlashGear in a statement this evening. It seems like the tech giants are struggling with the safe testing of the self-driving vehicles.

The local police reported that minor injuries have been caused from the accident after a sedan swerved into a Waymo van to avoid any other collision.

Meanwhile, the autonomous vehicle incurred lesser damage as it was presumably hit at an angle from the side.

It's not clear which human driver was at fault, but forthcoming video from the Waymo vehicle will likely reveal more.

As per the statement of the police regarding the investigation, they said, " We are now investigating a minor injury collision involving two vehicles, one of which is a Waymo autonomous vehicle. Both the Waymo vehicle and the Honda were towed from the scene.

Detective Seth Tyler said the driver of that Honda had to swerve to avoid slamming into a auto that had the green light and was moving into the intersection.

While the van was reportedly operating in self-driving mode at the time of the crash, it reportedly had an operator sitting in the driver's seat. For now, it seems like the autonomous vehicle was not directly responsible for the crash. As the Honda swerved, the vehicle continued eastbound into the westbound lanes of Chandler Blvd.

The Waymo vehicle, a Chrysler Pacifica, was struck by a human-piloted Honda sedan that swerved to avoid hitting another auto, according to a police statement reported by the Associated Press. "This incident is still under investigation". The sedan's front crumple zone is wrecked and glass is broken; the van is in better shape, though its front right tire is crushed in.
