The Vikings secured Trae Waynes for the 2019 season

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) - The Minnesota Vikings have re-signed cornerback Terence Newman, bringing the NFL's oldest active defensive player back for a 16th season that will begin five days after he turns 40.

Waynes signed a four-year, $12.9 million contract after being selected with the 11th pick in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. On Monday, they chose to exercise his option, keeping him on board through 2019 where he will earn a base salary of $9 million. He has appeared in 46 out of a possible 48 games in his career. He spent the first nine years of his career with the Dallas Cowboys, the next three with the Cincinnati Bengals (including two with Zimmer as the defensive coordinator) and the past three with the Vikings. The 2003 first-round pick will be the seventh-oldest player in the National Football League next season and the second-oldest positional player, behind only Tom Brady, who turns 41 in August. Waynes became a full-time starter for the Vikings at the corner position in 2017 where he ended his year with 57 tackles and two interceptions.

Minnesota's defense gave up just 192.4 passing yards game last season, second only to the Jacksonville Jaguars. They took Mike Hughes out of UCF in the first round (No. 30 overall) and also added Holton Hill as an undrafted free agent. He should have a situational role in the Vikings' crowded secondary. May.
