Kremlin hopes situation in Armenia to be resolved by constitutional means

Pashinyan earlier met with members of his Elk faction.

Pashinyan, who needs a handful of votes from lawmakers to become the country's next premier, saw his chances boosted Sunday when a senior lawmaker said the ruling Republican Party would not stand in the way of his candidacy.

Pashinyan, who is the leader of the protests that ousted Sargsyan, insisted that the political parties in the parliament should vote for him as the next interim prime minister before new snap elections.

"It was emphasised that resolving the political crisis in Armenia must take place exclusively through legal means in the framework of the current constitution", the Kremlin said.

"I had a meeting with an official from Moscow and got reassurance that Russian Federation would not intervene in Armenia's internal affairs", Pashinyan told protesters gathered in Republic square in central Yerevan. The ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) announced on Saturday that they would not nominate any candidate for prime minister.

"Everything will be fine, we just need to consolidate our victory".

The Republican Party holds a majority of 58 seats of 105 in Armenia's parliament, the National Assembly.

"At 11:00 a.m. (10:00 a.m. Moscow time) on May 1, I call on my supporters to gather for a rally on Yerevan's Republic Square when the parliament begins election of prime minister".

"There is a mood that a prime minister should be elected on May 1", he said, without elaborating.

Russian border guards patrol Armenia's border with Turkey and Iran.

The United States on Saturday urged "good faith" in negotiations, with a State Department statement calling for "a resolution that reflects the interests of all Armenians".

The opposition has accused him of having failed as president to tackle poverty, corruption and the influence of oligarchs in the country of 2.9 million people.
