Senate Confirms Pompeo as New Secretary of State

Current CIA Director Mike Pompeo has been confirmed as our next secretary of state, earning the support of six Democrats and one Independent.

Yet his opponents had warned that his hawkish foreign policy views and negative comments about gay marriage and Muslims made him ill-equipped to serve as a diplomat or to represent the United States on the world stage.

"One of the reasons I was anxious about Director Pompeo because when I've asked him repeatedly was the Iraq war a mistake, President Trump has said it was a mistake, do you say it was a mistake, I wasn't getting a direct answer", he said of his change of heart. He was nominated for secretary of state after the president dismissed Rex Tillerson.

"From North Korea's nuclear threats to Iran's aggression, Mike's confirmation as Secretary of State comes at a critical time for US foreign policy", said Ed Royce (R-CA), the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Trump sent Pompeo to North Korea three weeks ago to meet with the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, ahead of a summit with the US president to address Pyongyang's nuclear program.

That responsibility may fall on the shoulders of Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, who is described as a policy hawk.

Recall, Pres. Trump sent Pompeo to N. Korea for a meeting with N. Korea's Kim.

Past secretaries of state, including Condoleezza Rice, John Kerry, and Hillary Clinton have breezed through their respective confirmations.

Pompeo graduated at the top of his class at West Point and attended Harvard Law School.

"The U.S. appears headed towards a catastrophic exit from the Iran deal in spite of the pleas of our closest allies and Mike Pompeo will only encourage Trump off the brink".

Throughout the confirmation process, Republicans and even some media outlets criticized opposition from Democrats, saying Pompeo was qualified for the position and should be confirmed.

But Paul's opposition proved flimsy earlier this week, when Paul caved to pressure from Trump and chose to support Pompeo, allowing him to advance out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee with a favorable recommendation. Pompeo would then race to a plane waiting to take him to Belgium for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting.

From Brussels, Pompeo was expected to travel to the Middle East with stops in Saudi Arabia, Israel and Jordan over the weekend and Monday, said the officials, who were not authorized to publicly discuss the planning and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Haspel's confirmation hearing is scheduled for May 9. Pompeo planned to keep up pressure on NATO's European members, particularly Germany, to live up to their past pledges to boost their defense spending.

"The campaign has reached and mobilized more than 100,000 pro-life activists, generating thousands of constituent phone calls and tweets", the pro-life organization added.
