French president urges U.S. to reject isolationism

"We want to come home". We have no choice but to prevail, and together we shall prevail. "And together we shall prevail".

Asked whether a Trump decision to withdraw would signify a personal failure for him, Macron said that his role "is not to try to convince President Trump to walk away from his campaign commitments". "But we should not abandon it without having something more substantial instead".

"All they [Iran] do is scream 'Death to America", Trump said. "And the Republicans see France as a valuable military ally who brings respect for their embattled American president". There is the situation in Syria, there is security in the entire region and I think, in any case, we share a common goal of avoiding an escalation and proliferation of nuclear weapons in the region.

"We are killing our planet".

But there was no question that Macron also sought to distance himself from the president. "If we do not act with urgency as a global community, I am convinced that the worldwide institutions, including the United Nations and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, will no longer be able to exercise a mandate and stabilising influence". Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said during a press conference: "We know that the nuclear deal was the meticulous work of a number of countries". "We should follow them".

The European Union was equally clear in its opposition to the offer.

"The direction of the talks seems to be more or less preserving the status quo of the nuclear deal", he said.

He gave an impassioned speech in which he reminded Congress that the USA "invented this multilateralism" and now needed to help preserve it.

The U.S. president called the agreement "insane" and "ridiculous" and has threatened to withdraw from it.

Macron said during his state visit to the USA that the current deal should not be ripped apart without a clear path to the future.

Mr Macron, whose country has faced a number of terror attacks in the past five years, said the violence in both countries has been an incredible price to pay for freedom, for democracy. Not in 10 years.

He said he would work with Mr Trump to build a "new framework" in the Middle East - and especially in Syria.

A US withdrawal from the Iran agreement would raise tensions in an already volatile region, possibly prompting an arms race involving Saudi Arabia.

"For me it's progress, it avoids falling into the complete unknown if the United States decision is a hard exit", said Macron, who confirmed that the proposal was a strategy coordinated with European partners and not a unilateral one.

Macron said the USA has a special duty in building the "21st century world order".

However, Britain and its European allies France and Germany argue that the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is working and are seeking ways to address Trump's concerns about Iran's wider activity without ditching the nuclear deal.

France's President Emmanuel Macron urged the United States to embrace multilateralism and warned of the perils of a trade war and "extreme nationalism" in an address to Congress pushing back against Donald Trump's "America First" agenda.

He spoke about the "unbreakable bonds" between the United States and France and their common values of tolerance, liberty and human rights. "That is why we can not say we should get rid of it like that". While he was still "advocating" retention of the deal, he said, "I'm not a masochist".

She noted that while Trump and Macron seemed nearly excessively friendly in their public appearances Tuesday, the French president's speech on Wednesday before Congress revealed that he is deeply critical of the USA president's governing philosophy.
