Over three million has been spent on the tightly contested race, according to reports, as it represents a chance for State Democrats to gain control of the now GOP controlled State Senate. Felder has long sided with the GOP.

Only one was in Nassau County, in the 17th Assembly District, where John Mikulin's win kept Republican control after the resignation of Thomas McKevitt to become a Nassau County legislator.

"I don't know how this can be healthy in any way for good government when every elected official that controls every element of the government is a Democrat from New York City", Griffo said.

Democrats over-performed in other NY races Tuesday, but they had focused first on the 37th State Senate District, which was vacated after the incumbent was elected as Westchester County executive. But Republicans will stay in charge at least through the end of the legislative session in June thanks to the support of a breakaway Democrat, Sen.

Luis Sepulveda, left, speaks to a constituent while campaigning in the Bronx borough of NY on Monday. Democratic leaders had hoped Felder might return if they win Tuesday's elections in Westchester County and the Bronx.

Republicans now have a one-seat Senate majority.

Democrats won two special elections Tuesday to give them a numeric Senate majority, 32 to 31. Polls opened at 6 a.m. and will close at 9 p.m. But Mr. Felder, who was elected in 2012 as a Democrat but nearly immediately declared his intentions to sit with Republicans, remained an outlier.

In New York, Democrats already management the Meeting and maintain the places of work of governor, lawyer basic and controller.
