Gmail's Refreshed Desktop Design Goes Live With Improved Security And New Features

Gmail's getting a major update on desktop and mobile

With an aim to lure away Microsoft Outlook users, the services will be soon offered to its 1.4 billion users. So changes are important.

But, numerous new Gmail features revolve around getting you the information you need without having to click through to an individual email and open it up. Confidential mode will begin to roll out to consumer Gmail users and a limited number of G Suite customers in the coming weeks.

The updated aesthetics aren't hard to adjust to and there's a handful of great new features.

There will also be Nudging where email that Gmail believes is important will be pushed higher up the priority ladder. When I respond to emails, I often need to know what meetings, appointments, holidays, and so forth are on my plate. Google's intention is to then make the new Gmail switch on by default, but give users to the option to switch back - before finally pulling the plug on the old Gmail entirely.

Google has added "confidential mode" to the new Gmail which will prevent users from copying, downloading or printing the email. "Confidential" mode also helps reduce the risk of private information being accidentally shared with the wrong people. It's also bringing over "nudging", where your Gmail will attempt to intelligently make suggestions for tasks that you need to do, such as reply to a certain email that has languished in your inbox for a week. It has launched delightfully simple mobile apps for it, too. Integrated third-party apps can be accessed from the right rail as well. If the crux of an email is simply filler to get you to read an attachment, you can bypass all that and jump straight in.

Gmail is also making it easier to take actions on messages. The new Snooze button, which will appear as a button option when hovering over as specified messages (alongside archive, delete and mark as read), will allow you to delay a reminder it's there until a time of your choosing, such as later that day or tomorrow.

A new "offline mode" lets you prepare messages to be sent while you're not connected to the internet, and it will send them once you get back online.

You can also set emails to self-destruct, Ethan Hunt style.

What are you most excited to see in the new Gmail? The feature is similar to the one in Google's Inbox app. Reply?", and for sent emails, the mailing client will use text such as "Sent X days ago.

The new Gmail: what is new?

Gmail for web will also allow you to quickly access attachments right from the inbox without having to open the mail.

For a while now, mobile users of Gmail have used something called "smart reply". Now, however, there's a Pinned messages view that you can see with a single toggle at the top of the app. Previously, Google added spreadsheets and instant messaging features to its G suite platform. Therefore this ensures that if the recipient's account were ever to be hacked, this email would no longer be accessible.
