Jay Feely says picture with gun, daughter was joke

I don't know why the hell he thought a picture of him, his daughter, her date and A GUN would be a good look!

Was Feely's controversial photo appropriate?

The thing was a handgun, and the caption was this, via ESPN.com: "Wishing my handsome daughter and her date a great time at prom #BadBoys".

The picture posted on Saturday quickly received backlash for its "insensitive" content.

Twitter went wild after some users felt Feely's post was inappropriate.

The 41-year-old's post comes at a time when gun laws and safety have permeated the national discussion, heightened after the Stoneman Douglas High School (Fla.) shooting on February 14 that killed 17, many of whom were students.

Critics said the photoshoot was insensitive and diminished the real threat of gun violence, especially in light of the recent school shootings.

It's a running joke that fathers will be waiting for their daughter's date with a shotgun.

The 41-year-old Feely played 14 years in the National Football League, including four seasons with the Cardinals from 2010-13.

The responses on social media were swift and critical enough that he tweeted Sunday that the picture was "obviously meant to be a joke". He now works as a college football and NFL analyst for CBS Sports.

To which Watts moved to get in the last word, saying, "Guns are not toys or props".
