Mike Pompeo On Track For Confirmation For Secretary Of State

WASHINGTON-Two more Senate Democrats said Monday they would support Mike Pompeo for secretary of state, giving him some breathing room in the full Senate despite his likely rejection by the Senate panel considering his nomination.

"The Dems will not approve hundreds of good people, including the Ambassador to Germany".

Trump also weighed in on Monday morning, blasting the Democrats on Twitter.

Critics say Pompeo is too conservative to represent the country on the world stage, given past harsh remarks about Islam and homosexuality and fears he would favor military action over diplomacy and be too likely to agree with Trump rather than step back and give his best advice to the commander in chief.

"We certainly hope that some members will change their minds", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said during a morning interview on Fox News, in which she accused Democrats of playing "political games" with Trump's nomination of Pompeo, the current Central Intelligence Agency director.

Marc Short, the White House legislative director, said recent weeks have been "incredibly disheartening" as he has had private conversations with Democrats who say Pompeo is qualified but will not vote for him because of political considerations.

Senior White House officials on Monday urged Democrats and a key Republican to reconsider their positions on Mike Pompeo's nomination as secretary of state ahead of what could be an unfavorable committee vote later in the day.

Pompeo's confirmation before the full Senate now hangs in balance, with the votes of just a handful of senators determining whether he becomes the nation's top diplomat after Trump fired Rex Tillerson last month. White House allies are unloading ad campaigns against Democrats from Trump-won states, including North Dakota, Indiana and Missouri, to vote for the president's nominee.

The USA Today board registered its concerns about Pompeo's hawkish views, his opposition to the Iran nuclear deal, and his agreement to pull out of the Paris Climate Accords. Dianne Feinstein of California, Tim Kaine of Virginia, Brian Schatz of Hawaii and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire. All are up for re-election this year in states that supported Trump in 2016. He made his decision after sitting down with the nominee.

"Mike Pompeo is outstanding".

"Those of us voting against Pompeo are not obstructing anything", wrote Menendez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Republicans like Corker shrug at the prospect of a historically low vote.

The unfavorable recommendation to the Senate floor however is unlikely to sink Pompeo's nomination.

"Democrats, especially on the Foreign Relations Committee, are really engaged in shameful political behavior, ' Cotton said Sunday on CBS" 'Face the Nation'. Rand Paul have already said they will not support a recommendation to the full Senate.
