Cubs' Kris Bryant leaves game after getting hit in head by pitch

Bryant's seventh HBP of the season came in the top of the first Sunday, with two outs and no one on against Rockies' starter German Marquez, and brought a very scary moment.

Trevor Story hit a two-run triple in the third on a fly ball Heyward loss in the sun, and home runs on consecutive pitches by Charlie Blackmon and Arenado cut the Rockies' deficit to 6-4 in the fifth.

Brandon Morrow bounced a pitch that ricocheted off catcher Willson Contreras' mitt.

Jose Quintana (2-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. The ball made a loud sound as it hit off the left side of the brim of Bryant's helmet.

Bryant was obviously immediately tended to by Cubs coaching and training staff members.

The Cubs tacked on an additional run in the second inning on a solo home run from Javier Baez and followed that up with a pair of runs in the third inning off the bat of outfielder Jason Heyward who drove home La Stella and Cartini with a one-out RBI single to right field.

Diamondbacks 4, Padres 2 • Patrick Corbin struck out 11 in six innings to improve to 4-0, and host Arizona became the first team in 15 years to win its first seven series of a season. In his last outing, he gave up three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings. The Reds have the worst record in the majors at 3-18 and are 0-3 since firing manager Bryan Price and replacing him with Jim Riggleman. The Royals won for only the second time in 12 games, and Moustakas extended his hitting streak to 14.

But Bryant will be monitored closely, and a missed game or two seems certain.

Royals 8, Tigers 5 • Mike Moustakas' three-run homer in the seventh fueled visiting Kansas City's victory.
