Trump denies report that he privately calls Rod Rosenstein "Mr. Peepers"

Rod Rosenstein tells Donald Trump he's not a target in Mueller probe: Source

According to a report in the Washington Post, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has threatened that he might resign his post if President Donald Trump orders the firing of Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein.

Trump has become increasingly irked with Mueller and Rosenstein in recent weeks, particularly after the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Cohen's office, home and hotel last week, calling the seizure of Cohen's records an "attack on our country". A source told the Post that Sessions said he was relieved to hear that the meeting was "largely cordial".

Trump has sharply criticized his attorney general over Sessions' decision in March 2017 to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation. Democrats fear that, taken together, the Republican requests are meant to offer Mr. Trump cover or even cause to fire Mr. Rosenstein.

As of Friday afternoon, more than 800 former Justice Department employees had signed an open letter calling on Congress to "swiftly and forcefully respond to protect the founding principles of our Republic and the rule of law" if Trump were to fire the deputy attorney general, special counsel Robert Mueller or other senior Justice Department officials.

The moment echoes another conversation early in Trump's presidency, when he spoke with then-FBI director James Comey.

Rosenstein oversees the law enforcement investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. That referral was approved by Rosenstein, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The relationship between Sessions and Rosenstein - and their staffs - has been strained at times over the first year of the Trump administration. The F.B.I. doubled the number of employees working on responses to a request for materials the Justice Department's inspector general was using to 54 people working two shifts a day, from 8 a.m.to midnight.

"I do think a case is being built against him [Rosenstein]".

While Trump has made Sessions a regular public punching bag, attacking him on multiple occasions, such a resignation would risk plunging the White House into crisis.

According to the Post, one person familiar with the phone call said that Sessions did not intend to threaten his resignation but simply wanted to express his concern that Rosenstein's ouster would put him in a hard position. "They do not have a clear approach to do away with him".

On coverage, Trump has embraced an excessive amount of what Periods is doing on the Justice Division.
