Some accounts, especially those visibly supportive of Saudi rival Qatar, suggested a coup attempt was unfolding, while others suggested a drone had flown too close to the palace, prompting gunfire to shoot it down.

Footage shared on social media appeared to show heavy shooting that lasted for at least 30 seconds, sparking speculation of political unrest.

Saudi sports authority chief Turki al-Sheikh tweeted, "We are not going to tolerate this", He even directed adviser to look into the matter and find out who is behind the video.

The General Sports Authority said the video had scenes which can corrupt public morals.

The Saudi king was reportedly evacuated to a nearby military bunker.

The apparently heavy-handed response to the drone isn't unusual in Saudi Arabia - Shiite rebels and their allies in Yemen have used drones against a Saudi-led coalition.

A year ago in July, the police inquired a woman who appeared in a lot of videos, initially posted on Snapchat, wearing a crop top on a high-waisted mini skirt.

She had been filmed walking through the historic fort of Ushaiqer, north of Riyadh, and playing with sand in the dunes. However, later she was released with no offence.

But the kingdom still requires women to seek permission from a male guardian - usually a father, husband or brother - to study, work or travel.
