State adds 5K jobs in March as unemployment holds steady

Florida's unemployment rate in March remained at 3.9 percent for the fourth month in a row.

Hawaii had the lowest rate in the nation, at 2.1 percent.

The U.S. rate is on a similar holding pattern at 4.1 percent since October and in a range of 4.1 percent to 4.5 percent over the past 12 months.

Florida's unemployment rates continue to hold steady at 3.9 percent for the third month in a row while ticking down slightly in Southwest Florida. Leisure and hospitality added the second highest number of jobs (32,300) followed by construction (31,600). "Both trends are good". He said Ohio's unemployment rate hadn't been this low since August 2001. The employment data recalculations are factored here as well.

State Labor and Workforce Development Department said Thursday that New Jersey's economy added 5,100 jobs, mostly in the private sector.

In March, 2,081,906 people were counted as employed, up from February's count of 2,080,346, and significantly higher than March 2017's count of 2,063,770.

The only sector to lose jobs in the past 12 months was information, which includes media outlets. (Local government jobs increased 1,900, state government jobs by 200 and federal government jobs by 100.) Leisure and hospitality gained 1,600 jobs, manufacturing gained 1,500 and employment was up in construction by 1,200. Professional and business services have seen a decline.

Ten of California's eleven industry sectors added a total of 326,300 jobs over the year. The jobs were lost in private services.

EDD's payroll employment report (wage and salary jobs) in the nonfarm industries of California totaled 17,045,800 in March, a net loss of 7,200 jobs from February. Walden estimates that between 60,000 and 70,000 North Carolinians now are in the dropout category. Considered by most economists to be the most accurate measure of jobs, the QCEW includes data from nearly all employers in Wisconsin.
