How to create custom Amazon Alexa Skills without any coding knowledge

Amazon's new 'Alexa Blueprints' let anyone create custom Alexa skills and responses

Amazon's new 'Alexa Blueprints' let anyone create custom Alexa skills and responses

Unlike Skills, which are offered through a central marketplace to the tens of millions of owners of Alexa devices, Blueprint functions are limited to devices connected to a user's Amazon account.

A user will simply add an activation phrase to Alexa's knowledge base like "Alexa, open my burns" from there you can also add a response like, "You again?" The Alexa skills a user creates are specially designed for personal use, and will only appear on the devices that are registered to the user's Amazon account. To make things even simpler Amazon has separated all the different blueprints out into their own respective categories with a handful in each one so users should find what they're looking for without much of an issue, if there are any issues at all.

The Alexa Blueprint website lets you create quizzes, joke lists, home tour guides, birthday trivia, stories, etc.

After you've filled in your own content, you name it and publish with a click. Presumably, like other Alexa features, Amazon will be rolling it out internationally in the coming weeks and months. But to create Alexa skills, a technical background was required.

After selecting which Blueprint you want to work with, you'll be able to quickly edit the questions and responses to your exact liking.

The opening of Alexa skills to non-coders will help Amazon gain an edge over rivals Google Home and Apple HomePod.

Before you put on your thinking hat to innovate skills and responses, it is to be understood that the ability to do so is now limited to the U.S. and for the English language.

Are there any example custom Alexa Skills?

Amazon has an Alexa Blueprints page set up with 21 templates (more to come).

The new smart speaker comes in a smaller design compared to Amazon's other voice controlled devices, and includes a circular display screen to complement Alexa, the smart assistant that powers Echo devices.
