Michael Cohen seeks restraining order on items seized by feds

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen is under criminal investigation for his "business dealings" and has been a target of law enforcement for months, the Justice Department said on Friday.

The FBI raided Michael Cohen's legal office and his hotel room at the Loews Regency in Manhattan on Monday.

Trump has denied any knowledge of Cohen's payment to secure Daniel's October 2016 signature on a secret agreement preventing her from talking about the affair.

Prosecutors and the attorneys for Cohen and Trump appeared before U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood on Friday in Manhattan.

"It's kind of like when you're boyfriend breaks up with you and then you put pictures on Instagram looking really happy, having champagne", Kirsten Powers joked.

"Because the facts underlying this action and the criminal investigation related to Mr. [Michael] Cohen overlap, Mr. Cohen's Fifth Amendment rights may be adversely impacted if this case proceeds", lawyers for Cohen and Trump argued in court regarding Cohen's right against self-incrimination. "... He is the President of the United States".

The raids followed a referral by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who for almost a year has been looking into whether Trump's presidential campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

Cohen's attorneys say they want a chance to review documents seized in the raid on Monday and specify items they believe aren't relevant to the investigation.

Meanwhile the lawyer for adult film star Stormy Daniels argued that the seized materials concern his client, who claims the president slept with her.

Cohen joined the Trump Organization as general counsel in 2006. He has described it as an overreach by prosecutors into the privileged communications between Mr. Cohen and his client, Mr. Trump.

One source said Cohen played to Trump and some associates conversations that he had with political and media figures during the exploratory part of the campaign.

"It resulted in the unnecessary seizure of protected attorney client communications between a lawyer and his client", attorney Stephen Ryan said in the statement.

Cohen had already notified US District Court in Los Angeles on Thursday that he meant to request a stay in Daniels' lawsuit against him and Trump "on the grounds that an ongoing criminal investigation overlaps with the facts of this case". The hearing was set for Monday afternoon. When he introduced himself to the judge to ask to be heard, Wood seemed to indicate that she was already aware of his identity. Hendon, that claimed she was hired by Trump day, urged Wood maybe not to decide that gets got right up until after she files a short while by Sunday 33, inspection documents that were seized.

McKay said rsquo & Trump;s capacity to emphasise that the privilege is " rdquo & no more different; from anyone else & rsquo; s.

McDougal alleges in a lawsuit that Cohen has a cozy relationship with Davidson.

Public corruption prosecutors in the US attorney's office in Manhattan are trying to determine, according to one person familiar with the investigation, if there was any fraud related to payments to McDougal and Clifford.
