Due to pressure from MEPs, the Council of Ministers of the EU agreed to renegotiate the agreement in the coming year with the United States for the exchange of data bank. The plans for these, we learn from the report of the European Parliament. Swedish Justice Minister Beatrice Ask has announced yesterday that the document, which is currently under discussion with U.S. authorities, "will be valid for no longer than twelve months." "Direct renegotiation will take place under the Treaty of Lisbon" - said EU Commissioner Jacques Barrot. In accordance with applicable regulations, then Parliament will have the last word on such contracts.

Parliament yesterday passed a resolution under which the data will be "communicated to the U.S. offices and processed only for the purpose of combating terrorism." To prevent abuse, the reported overseas information about EU citizens and companies must be identical to the legal instruments for data stored within the Community.

In July, EU Ministers gave the Commission a mandate to negotiate without Parliament. According to the Parliament is contrary to the opinion of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Council of Ministers, under which the case falls within the "Community competence". During the earlier debates in the Committee on Civil Liberties deputies spoke with concern about the withdrawal of Parliament to participate in negotiations on the interim agreement on the exchange of financial data between the EU and the U.S..

In 2006, the media revealed that the U.S. could reach to the data of Europeans without their knowledge. This information is stored by SWIFT established in Belgium. In July this year there were reports of negotiations on a new agreement because the organization of the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) in Switzerland to build a new European data center storage.
